The area of wetlands declared to be Ramsar sites. The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, called the Ramsar Convention, is an intergovernmental treaty of the 1970s, ratified by Chile in 1981. Its main objective is to ensure the preservation of wetlands and provide protection measures for the water birds that inhabit it and for the migratory birds that temporarily occupy it. It considers the conservation of wetlands, marshes, swamps, areas of moss or water, natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, static or flowing, fresh or salt water, including areas of seawater whose depth does not exceed 6 meters during low tide as habitat for water birds (Source: National Forestry Corporation (CONAF)).
