Determination of isotopic content of oxygen-18 in precipitations. The main objective of the systematic collection of isotopic data contained in precipitations is to determine in temporal and spatial form the variation of environmental isotopes for use in hydrological and environmental research for plans related to the exploitation, development, and management of water resources. The isotopic content is determined by two factors. The first is evaporation, which is due to the higher vapor pressure of light molecules. These molecules preferentially escape to the atmosphere when water evaporates, thus the wastewater undergoes enrichment in heavy isotopes, giving less negative d values. The other factor is altitude (latitude), which is related to the atmospheric temperature and causes the precipitations that take place in higher levels to present lower concentrations of heavy isotopes (isotopically lighter waters, with greater negative values of d) (Source: INE-CCHEN).
