Total number of landings of hydrobiological resources from artisanal fisheries. Chilean legislation defines artisanal fishing as the extractive fishing activity carried out by natural persons in a personal, direct, and habitual manner and, in the case of management areas, by legal persons composed exclusively of artisanal fishermen, registered as such. An artisanal fisherman is one who works as an owner or crew member on an artisanal vessel. If he owns up to two vessels, he will be an artisanal shipowner; if his main activity is the extraction of shellfish, he will be a shellfisherman; and if he collects and harvests algae, he will be an algae farmer. These categories of artisanal fisherman are not mutually exclusive, so a person can be qualified and can act simultaneously or successively in two or more categories, provided that all are exercised in the same region. On the other hand, an artisanal vessel is defined as a vessel with a maximum length of 18 meters and up to 50 metric tons of gross tonnage, operated by an artisanal shipowner, identified and registered as such in the corresponding records. The unit of measurement of the landing is expressed in metric tons (Source: National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service).
